"Current first aid certificate" shows up in Cairns job ads from childcare centres to reef boats to building sites, and plenty of applicants are not sure which course the employer actually means. There are several, they are not interchangeable, and buying the wrong one wastes a day and the fee. Here is how the pieces fit together.
The certificate employers actually mean
When a Cairns job ad asks for first aid, it almost always means the nationally recognised unit HLTAID011 Provide First Aid. That is the standard workplace first aid certificate in Australia, and it includes CPR within it.
You will also see CPR-only courses advertised. That unit covers resuscitation and nothing else, and it exists mostly as the annual refresher for people who already hold the full certificate. If an ad says first aid, a CPR-only certificate does not satisfy it, so do not buy the cheaper course thinking it is the same thing.
There is also a version of the unit built for people working in education and care settings, which some childcare employers specifically require. If you are applying for childcare jobs, ask the centre which unit they need before you book anything. It is a one sentence question that saves you paying twice.
Who needs one in Cairns
More of the local job market than you might expect:
- Childcare and early learning. Education and care services are legally required to have first aid qualified staff, and in practice most Cairns centres want every educator qualified. It is close to a non-negotiable in this sector.

How to pick a course in Cairns
First aid training is delivered by registered training organisations, they set their own prices and schedules, and the quality of the admin varies more than the quality of the training. Before you pay:
- Check the provider is an RTO delivering the actual unit, not a reseller with a lookalike certificate. The national register at training.gov.au lists who is registered to deliver what.
- Confirm the unit code. You want HLTAID011, or the education and care version if your employer asked for that. Get the code in writing before you book.
- Ask how the course is delivered. Many providers run the theory online and the practical assessment in person, which suits shift workers. You cannot do the whole thing on your phone: the assessment involves demonstrating CPR and bandaging in front of an assessor, so there will be an in-person component.
- Ask when you get the statement of attainment. Employers want the paperwork, not your word. Same-week certificates are common, but confirm rather than assume, especially if you have a start date.

Some employers pay for the course or reimburse it, particularly in childcare and aged care, so ask before you spend your own money.
How renewals work
This trips people up. The certificate itself does not have a legal expiry printed on the law, but the widely followed industry guidance is that the CPR component should be refreshed every year and the full first aid certificate renewed every few years.
