How to find a job in Cairns

Finding work in Cairns runs on different rules than Brisbane or Melbourne. It is a small city with a big visitor economy, employers within an industry mostly know each other, and plenty of hiring happens before a role is ever advertised. That works against you if all you do is hit apply on a national job site, and for you once you know how the place operates.

Start with the industries that actually hire here

Cairns and the wider Far North run on a handful of sectors. Knowing which one you are aiming at saves you weeks.

• Hospitality and tourism: cafes, pubs, restaurants, hotels, reef and rainforest operators. The biggest single entry point into work here, and the most willing to train someone from scratch.
• Trades and construction: residential building, civil, air conditioning, electrical, plumbing. Steady demand, and a white card is the front door.
• Retail: the shopping centres and the city strip, with a big hiring push in the lead up to christmas.
• Health, aged care and disability support: the region's most reliable long term employment, and it keeps hiring through the quiet months when tourism does not.
• Office and administration: smaller in volume than the rest, so apply wide and apply fast when something opens.
• Agriculture: cane, bananas, tropical fruit and cattle across the Tablelands and the coastal strip.

If you have no formal experience yet, start with entry level roles and pick up a ticket or two while you look.

Look in more than one place

No single website holds every Cairns job. Cover all of these:

1. A local job board. Every listing on Cairns Jobs comes from a local Cairns or Far North Queensland employer, it is free to apply, and you do not need an account.
2. The big national boards. Slower and noisier, but larger employers still post there.
3. Local Facebook groups. A lot of casual and last minute shift work in Cairns never leaves Facebook. Join the community and industry groups for your field and check them daily.
4. Employer websites directly. Councils, the public health service, the airport, the larger resorts and the civil contractors run their own careers pages and often list there first.
5. Labour hire and recruitment agencies. Worth registering with for trades, civil, warehousing or admin, and the usual route into fly in fly out work out of Cairns.
6. Windows and noticeboards. Cafes and pubs still tape a sign up when they need someone now.

Walking in with a resume still works here

In a lot of Australian cities this is dead advice. In Cairns hospitality, retail and small trades it is still one of the fastest ways to get hired. Do it properly:

• Print eight or ten copies and keep them somewhere they will not crumple.
• Dress the way you would for a shift, not for a corporate interview.
• Go mid morning or mid afternoon. Never during the lunch rush, never at the start of dinner service.
• Ask if the manager is around. If not, ask when they usually are and come back then.
• Keep it to a minute. Your name, what you are after, your availability, your tickets, then hand it over and let them get back to work.
• If they tell you to email it instead, do that the same day and mention that you dropped in.

Cairns is one or two handshakes wide in most industries. That cuts both ways.

• Tell people you are looking. Neighbours, the gym, your sports club, the school gate, former colleagues. Jobs that never get advertised go to whoever heard about it first.
• Leave every job well. Reference checks here are often an informal call between two managers who already know each other.
• If you had a good season somewhere, message them before the next one starts. Returning staff get first pick of the shifts.

The honest version of a regional job market

Worth knowing before you get frustrated:

• There are fewer roles per field than in a capital city. If your specialisation is narrow, you may be waiting for the one job rather than choosing between five.
• Most work starts casual. Permanent hours are usually earned after a few months of turning up reliably, not offered on day one.
