How long should a resume be for a Cairns job?

Should I put a photo on my resume in Australia?

Put the practical answers at the top

The first block, above everything else, should give them:

Your name.
An Australian mobile number. If you are moving here and still on an overseas number, get a local SIM first. Plenty of Cairns employers will not call an international number, and many barely use email at all.
A plain email address, ideally your first name and surname.
The suburb you live in, or the suburb you are moving to and the date you arrive. Not your full street address. They only want to know you can get to Edmonton or Smithfield for a 6am start.
Your availability in plain words. Something like: available now, any day, evenings and weekends included.
Whether you drive and have your own car. In Cairns that is worth saying explicitly.

Availability is the most persuasive line on an entry level Cairns resume. Put it in the first three lines, not the last three.

Tickets and licences go near the top

If a job ad asks for a ticket, the reader needs to find it in seconds. If you are on a working holiday or student visa, that is different and genuinely useful: state the visa type and your work rights in one short line so an employer does not have to guess or ask.

Keep the formatting boring

Plain beats clever every time here.

One column. Two column layouts scramble when they are parsed or opened on a phone.
A standard font at a readable size, black text on a white background.
No logos, graphics, icons, coloured banners or borders.
Real headings and real bullet points rather than tables and text boxes.
Send a PDF unless the ad specifically asks for Word.
Name the file properly: your name and the word resume. A file called document final v3 does not inspire confidence.

Write what you did, not what the job was

Most resumes list duties copied straight out of a position description. Write outcomes and scale instead, one line each.

Instead of responsible for customer service, write how many covers a night you served and how big the floor team was.
Instead of assisted with stock, write that you ran the weekly stocktake and ordering for a department.
Instead of general labouring, write two years on residential sites, formwork and concrete, own hand tools and PPE.

Use real numbers you actually know. Never invent them, because a Cairns interview is informal enough that you will be asked about it in passing.

Referees they can actually ring

Two is plenty. Australian mobile numbers, and ask each person first so they are not caught cold. A local referee carries real weight in a city this size, because there is a fair chance the person calling knows them or knows of them.

If all your referees are overseas, note the time difference and offer a written reference as well. For a first job, a coach, teacher or volunteer supervisor is perfectly acceptable. Family is not.

Then keep the cover note to three or four sentences in the body of the email or the application form: which role, why you can do it, your availability, and when you can start. Long cover letters do not get read by a venue manager at 4pm.
