RSA, White Card and Blue Card: the certificates that unlock Cairns jobs

Read enough Cairns job ads and three acronyms come up constantly: RSA, white card and blue card. Each is quick to obtain, and each unlocks a whole slice of the local job market. Here is what they are and when you need them.

RSA: Responsible Service of Alcohol

What it is: the Queensland certificate legally required for anyone serving or supplying alcohol, from pouring beers to waiting tables where wine is served.

Who needs it: bartenders, wait staff, gaming attendants, bottle shop staff, function staff. In a tourism town like Cairns that covers a large share of all hospitality jobs.

Getting it: a short approved course, commonly completed in under a day, available from multiple providers in Cairns and online. Queensland has its own requirements, so make sure the course you take is valid for Queensland.

White card: construction induction

What it is: the general construction induction card, the legal minimum to work on any Australian construction site.

Who needs it: labourers, trades assistants, apprentices, and anyone whose job takes them onto site, including some delivery and cleaning roles. It is the ticket that opens every labouring job in Cairns.

Getting it: a one-day course through a registered training organisation. Once you hold it, it does not expire, though you must have worked in the industry within the last two years for it to remain valid.

Blue card: working with children

What it is: Queensland's working with children check.

Who needs it: anyone working or volunteering with children, which in Cairns means childcare and teaching support roles, plus school cleaning contracts, outside school hours care, coaching and some tourism roles that supervise minors.

Getting it: an application and background check through the Queensland Government, not a course. Processing takes time, so apply before you need it. Employers in childcare will usually not interview without one in progress.
